SS24 KTM rider Shaun Simpson had a mixed bag of results this weekend at Matterley Basin, for round two of the FIM World MXGP Championship.
“The British GP is always highly anticipated, I was really looking forward to it,” said Simpson.
“I thought the track was going to be in really good nick with the rain and the forecast and stuff, but unfortunately it was super dry and not really watered enough or technical enough in my opinion.
“So It didn’t really feel that good from the get go, the one day format is still playing on my mind I don’t really have that much time to set my bike up before the two motos, it feels like your packing up and going home before you’ve got started.
“I struggled in qualifying I managed to get 26th on my last fast lap, which gave me a horrible gate pick for both the moto’s. In the first race got round the first corner pretty decent and to be honest charged the whole moto for sixteenth and I was pretty happy with that, that gave me five points on the scorecard and I followed Van Horebeek for most of the first race and I felt like I pushed him towards the end he went on to finish eighth in the second moto. Then I made a mistake and spent the whole second moto battling for 25th, so it was a day of two halfs.
“It just shows you how important the start is and how stacked the field is, i’m definitely looking forward to more races coming up in the next couple of weeks and more GP’s to get my teeth sunk into, and some more time to get the bike set up better I still feel like I’m struggling with it, and thats been a recurring thing over the past few weeks.
“Fortunately I never had any brake problems over the weekend which is something we’ve been trying to work on so that was good, trying to take positives away, but it’s been a tough old month really, so im looking forward to Italy this weekend, then I’ve got a weekend off to try and get everything planned before five GP’s in a row so it’s going to be pretty hectic. It was awesome to be back there with a crowd this weekend and I feel proud to have left there with everyone having a good time, the event was top notch.”
