MXGP of Pietramurata: Adam Sterry back on form

It’s been a tough season for former British MX2 champ Adam Sterry (Hitachi KTM fuelled by Milwaukee) but the Welshman is finally showing his true potential in the closing stages of his debut year in MXGP.
Ranked sixth in MX2 in 2019, Sterry initially signed to race for the JD Gunnnex KTM team but unexpectedly parted company with them and was picked up by Roger Magee.
Lady luck hasn’t always been on his side this year but at yesterday’s MXGP of Pietramurata he came good with 11-13 moto scores earning him 11th overall.
“Finally a day that I am happy with,” he said. “My back has been against the wall all year and today it felt like the work we have been putting in showed a bit. We changed some things on the bike again and it was a big improvement so I got my best overall in the MXGP class.
“It is almost a shame we only have one race left but I want to have another solid day and get a strong winter under my belt. That will be key.”
Competing in the MX2 class, Adam’s team-mates Conrad Mewse and Bas Vaessen suffered mixed fortunes.
Mewse was running comfortably in the top-10 in the opening moto when a mechanical problem forced him out with two laps to go but he fought back with a 10th-placed finish in race two.
“I am just struggling a bit on the starts so we are working on things as a team,” said Mewse. “It was an okay day though. It was not my best but it certainly was not my worst. I just need to find the flow that I have at the end of the race towards the start but we are working on it. The speed is there though.”
Vaessen struggled to get out the gate in both races and ran 16-11.
“It is the same old story for me,” said Vaessen. “My speed is there and so is my fitness but my starts are just shocking. Time practice was good this though – I was within a second of first.”
