Tony Cairoli faces fight for FIM silver medal

With his dream of a 10th world title to equal Stefan Everts’ record over for another year, Sicilian superstar Tony Cairoli (Red Bull KTM) now faces a tough fight at the final round of the 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship to hold onto second in the series standings.
A crash in the first moto at yesterday’s MXGP of Pietramurata that dropped him out of second didn’t help his cause and he was desperately unlucky that moto two was red-flagged after he’d grabbed the holeshot.
As a result, Swiss rider Jeremy Seewer (Monster Energy Yamaha) – who ran 1-3 to take 14 points out of Cairoli’s advantage over him – is now just four points behind.
“Physically it was a bit tricky,” said Cairoli. “In the first moto I made a good start and was riding smooth until I made that mistake. That wasn’t good from me and especially finishing sixth because [Jeremy] Seewer was in front.
“I started well again in the second moto but then we had to restart. I was fourth at the third start and [Clement] Desalle passed me. I was wary of the track being very slick. I wasn’t ready to attack and so settled for fifth. The goal now is to stay in front of Seewer at the last round and take second in the championship.”
