Edge Offroad got their Protect My Income Championship off to a flying start at the awesome Parkwood Offroad Centre, Tong, last Sunday.
The Youth riders rode a shortened loop of the Adult course. Brandon Burns only just managed to take the win in the Youth As, 11 seconds in front of Alex Leadbetter with John Stanley sitting in third! In the Youth B class Hayden Stansfield took a solid win for his first race of the season, clearly his winter training is paying off. Jak Heaney had to settle for second, and Lancashire lad Alfie Marsden took third home having snatched it from the holeshot queen Evie Reynolds!
In the Juniors Connor Gulbrandsen took a very solid win with Bailey Holmes managing a fantastic four laps for second place. Ryan Freeman Jnr had a storming ride in the Auto class ā this track sure was tough for the little wheels! But with sheer grit and determination there was nothing stopping these lads from finishing and Ryan took the win with Oliver Crookes second and Ashton Jones third.
The Adult event got underway with a huge entry booked in, the five-mile lap was easily going to take the traffic. First off was the massive Sportsman class, Paul Engelen took the holeshot, had a fantastic ride, set the fastest lap of the race and took a very comfortable win. Mike Taylor had to settle for second, only just, as Jack Ambler missed out on second by eight seconds and had to take third!
Next off was the Sportsman Vets ā again another large class. Phil Dodsworth settled in early, steady away and took a comfortable lead, ending up top dog on the podium. Second place man was Neil Myers and James Cooke-Thomas surprised himself by taking the last spot on the podium ā two and a half minutes down on Neil.
Another good turnout in the Over 50 class saw Andy Dean take the win. Simon Nutter settled for second, 49 seconds behind Andy, and late entry Gary Parr rounded out the podium. The Ladies class started with four and ended with two! Molly Howe broke her finger and Kate Smith had a mechanical. But Simone Wallis stamped her authority on this class, sheās clearly come on in leaps and bounds over the last few years, and was good to see her battling with Megan Wilson.
At the end of the two hours, Simone took the win from Megan by 34 seconds! Last off the start was the massive Novice class.
Having just moved up from Youth A, Tom Slater paced himself knowing nothing is won in the first lap, and by the end of the race the lad from Sheffield took an easy win home, one lap up on his nearest rival ā Billy Matthews. In third place was Jamie Dinsdale.
After a few changes to put the harder routes in for the PM brigade the fast lads got underway. Luke Flack returned from retirement, giving the Acklams Beta 200 an outing, got the holeshot and off he went! It wasnāt long before Joe Deakin put the hammer down slightly and took the lead. These two had a good battle but the fitness levels of Deakin were apparent and he pushed that bit more and took a solid win nearly three minutes up on Flacky in second with Sherco rider John Battensby third.
In the Expert class it was good to see Lewis Ellis back out there mixing it up! Lewis has clearly now turned his hand to Enduro and took a solid win from Ryan Hoare.Ā James Palmer made the trip to Tong to ride with the Edge Family and took third place home.
In the Clubman class it was Jason Hirst who took a good win from Kurt Weston. Ben Walker was surprised and happy to received his third place trophy. In the Masters class, Mark Houson took a break from the World Super Enduro series and had a ride out on home turf; took a comfortable win from Alex Owen in second and Anthony Crowe bagging third.
