Cooper Webb posted a heartfelt apology to America on his Instagram account last night and his fans rallied around, offering their support and words of comfort.
It was hard not to feel for Webb on the Nations podium – although he stood on the box, his weekend didn’t go to plan in Italy.
Webb was battling with Romain Febvre when the American crashed. It was one one of the worst parts of Maggiora Park to have a spill and it cost the Team USA pilot valuable time that couldn’t be reclaimed. At that moment most American fans knew – as did Webb – that it was over for another year.
We’ll never know if staying on the bike would have led to Team USA picking up the Chamberlain Trophy, but clearly, he felt the hopes of a nation were on his shoulders. And perhaps it weighed heavily.
It was for all to see, at the time, the defeat hurt the popular AMA champion and his words posted online later offer an insight into just how much.
The gutsy American rode his heart out and likely picked up more fans off the back of this defeat in Italy and to his credit, this experience hasn’t soured the Motocross des Nations for him – just the opposite, he appears even more hungry for it, declaring he “will be back”. And you know he will.
