ACU Events Ltd has been forced to dramatically revise dates for the 2016 Maxxis British Motocross Championship following a reshuffle of next year’s GP calendar.
Out of the eight provisional dates released in August, five have been changed with two now clashing with provisional dates for the Pirelli Masters series.
The big news, however, is that the series will revert back to two 25-minute plus two lap motos next year. The current three 20-minute plus two lap race format has proved unpopular with teams because of the extra expense involved along with the busier schedule. Riders have criticised it as well, saying not enough emphasis is placed on physical fitness.
Reverting to two races per class will also ensure an earlier end to the race programme – a bonus for teams and fans who have long return journeys.
For 2016 an eight-round MXY2 series will run alongside the main Maxxis championship.
Stuart Drummond, the Series Manager, is in the process of arranging contracts with the eight organisers and it’s hoped the venues will be confirmed ahead of the Dirt Bike Show.
“Sometimes change is difficult to implement but after a lot of consultation the two-race format seems the way to go at the moment,” explained an ACU Events spokesman. “Teams have been asking for this for several months now and while the championship is not run by the teams, we do consider them as very important partners in the series and after a recent meeting at ACU House their voice has been heard.”
