Led by Jeffrey Herlings, Grand Prix riders were the stars off the show at a sun-baked Hawkstone Park on Sunday. The Dutch ace dominated all three MX2 motos and won the class comfortably.
Herlings was so confident with his speed that he didn’t go out on the sighting lap for the second moto, electing to sit it out in the waiting zone for the remaining 39 riders to return.
Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki’s Max Anstie also had the legs on the rest of the field, giving everything to try and match the flying Herlings, earning a second place in each of the three motos.
Anstie has now closed the gap to just eight points on series leader Steven Lenoir (Dyer and Butler KTM) who recorded 3-3-4 card to take the lower step on the podium.
The MX1 races were much closer and Hitachi Construction Revo KTM UK’s Shaun Simpson was beaten in a moto for the first time in 2015 by Wilvo Forkrent KTM’s Steven Frossard who managed to stay on the pace for all three races, giving Simmo his hardest races of the year.
In the end Simpson edged the overall with two wins to the one of Frossard. Estonian Tanel Leok (LPE Kawasaki) recorded 3-5-3 finishes to take third overall and maintain his second place in the standings with the series at the halfway point.
The event also included the third round of the Veterans Championship and as expected sand specialist Ryan Voase (Kawasaki) won all three motos from Phil Mercer (IDS Transport KTM) while GL12 Yamaha’s Brian Wheeler kept in contention with 5-3-3 finishes.
The next round of the championship takes place on June 26 at a new venue to the series at Blaxhall Pits, Woodbridge in the East of England.
