Ryan Villopoto rocks to win number six in the fo-fiddy class while Blake Wharton takes a surprise victory in the Lites division…
Ryan Villopoto captures his sixth main event win of the AMA Supercross season in front of 59,872 fans at Lucas Oil Stadium while Rockstar Energy Racing Suzuki’s Blake Wharton wins the Lites class.
It’s Motoconcepts Suzuki rider Mike Alessi who captures the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot Award with Muscle Milk Honda’s Justin Brayton and Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin following in second and third. A small mistake by Alessi on lap five allows Brayton to make a pass into the lead.
Villopoto meanwhile is working his way through the and eventually passes Brayton for the lead before riding to victory. Brayton finishes second and for the second consecutive weekend JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha’s Davi Millsaps finishes on the podium with a third-place finish.
“This was by far the hardest track of the season,” says Villopoto. “It was slick out there and I had to be on my game. It was tough to make passes on this track.”
Red Bull Red KTM’s Ken Roczen leads the field through turn one in the Lites class main event with Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett following in second. Baggett quickly passes Roczen but Roczen answers back as he passes him near the end of the opening lap.
On lap five the race is red flagged due to a crash by Star/Valli/Yamaha’s Kyle Cunningham. The race is restarted in a staggered format with Roczen, Baggett and Wharton in the top three positions. Current points leader Justin Barcia restarts in eighth place.
After the restart Wharton charges his way around Baggett and on the same lap Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Darryn Durham moves into third place. While leading, Roczen crashes and suffers a mechanical problem that forces him to re-enter the race in last place. As a result, Wharton takes over the lead and Durham takes over second place. Wharton rides to the second win of his career and Durham finishes in second place for the second time this season. Barcia rounds out the podium with a third.
“I am very thankful to everyone that got me here,” said Wharton. “It was a strange start after the red flag but it was great for me. I didn’t look up until I saw the white flag and once I saw it I knew I had to ride smart for one more lap.”
