Defending champ Ryan Villopoto becomes the first rider to win two 450cc Main Events in the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship and in doing so jumps to the top of the standings.

The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider leads all 20 laps of the points-payer at Angel Stadium, Anaheim, although he loses the lead briefly to Chad Reed on the opening circuit. Oakland winner the previous weekend, James Stewart moves into third on the first lap and chases Reed down before making the pass on lap eight.

“James and Chad were riding good tonight,” says Villopoto. “I knew I had to stay on my toes and not make a mistake. We need to take it one race at a time.”

Ryan Dungey, who’d gone into the race tied on points with Reed for the series lead, comes home fourth after taking too long to pass Davi Millsaps and Justin Brayton and slips to third in the table

“I am not pleased to finish off the podium for a second weekend in a row,” admits the 2010 champ. “I had a better start in the Main Event this weekend but I struggled to make my passes and allowed those guys to move ahead. I will continue to work on my starts for next weekend and make sure I get my KTM back on the podium to remain in the points chase for the championship.”

In the Western Region Lites division British hopes take another blow when speedy Scot Dean Wilson can only manage fourth. Eli Tomac takes his third win on the bounce to 22 points clear of Wilson. Cole Seely, Lites winner at Anaheim 1, ends the evening second ahead of former world MX2 champ Marvin Musquin.
