Mika Ahola, the five-time world enduro champ, died this morning from injuries sustained in a practice crash near Girona, Spain. He was 38.
The Finn, who won five consecutive world titles for Honda across all three classes from 2007-2011, shocked the enduro world at the end of last season when he announced he was leaving Honda to ride for new Spanish manufacturer Jotagas. But then shocked everyone again when he decided to retire from the sport for good.
“I have fulfilled my ambitions and I feel that it is time to move on and see what else the world has to offer,” he said on New Year’s Day.
