Eastern Regional 250SX title contender Joey Savatgy has been hit with a five position penalty by the AMA, reports Supercross Live.

While in second Savatgy suffered a crash in the rhythm section, the Pro Circuit Kawasaki pilot remounted quickly and went on to finish third.

Unfortunately for Savatgy, the AMA later determined that he had failed to re-enter the track at the closest safe point – essentially cutting the track. The AMA ruled that Savatgy had gained from an unfair advantage.

The East Rutherford penalty drops him from third to eighth, costing him the points lead.

Jordon Smith, who crossed the finish line in fourth, is rewarded third place and takes over the championship with a one point lead over Savatgy and Osborne as the series heads to Las Vegas for what should be an epic finale.
