The massively-popular 2016 Monster Energy Arenacross Tour, powered by Ford Ranger, is preparing for the climax of what has been an electrifying 11-round series.
We’re just days away from its grand finale at the SSE Arena, Wembley on Saturday, February 27 with three riders capable of taking the Pro class crown.
And two British racers are in with a shout to secure the third step of the championship podium.
The mathematics leave us in no doubt that a Frenchman will win the esteemed Pro class trophy, but the scene is set for an epic end to series that has seen the red plate change bikes between the yellow of Ramette and blue of Soubeyras.
In his first AX Tour, Geartec Yamaha’s Monster Energy athlete Cedric Soubeyras has at times been the subject of controversy, but his racing talent is undeniable and he’s an exciting racer to watch.
With a tally of 189, he is just three points ahead of uber-smooth 2015 Arenacross Pro champ Thomas Ramette. Don’t let his highly efficient style fool you, he’s one super-quick Pro with AMA SX experience to call upon.
And 29 points back is his SR75 Molson Racing Suzuki team-mate, whoops-specialist Cyrille Coulon. This racer never gives up and his precise racing style is a joy to watch.
With double points for the AX finale in London, a potential 48 points are up for grabs for the best rider on the night, which rules out the title for Brits Adam Chatfield on 135 points and London local Jack Brunell with 127 points, but both are more than capable of taking the class win on the night and in doing so, could well lay claim to third overall in the championship and the hearts of, what is anticipated to be, a partisan crowd.
Away from the hard-core racing, the roar of the fans is expected to reach new heights when the highly-charged and energetic Freestyle motocross athletes hit the ramps for the last time on the tour.
Edgar ‘Godfather’ Torronteras, Jamie ‘Squibby’ Squib, Dan ‘Muscles’ Whitby, Samson ‘Joker’ Eaton and Arran ‘Babyface’ Powley are Tour regulars and have yet to disappoint AX audiences with their rad tricks, massive whips and roller-coaster back flips. These guys will want to go out on a high and they’ll be putting on a show for the fans to remember.
At the other end of the engine capacity scale, the youngest competitors of the tour, namely the 65cc Youth group are preparing for a battle royale.
If you thought the Pro title was tight – they’ve got nothing on the young guns with just one point separating the leading two KTM pilots.
The determined little guys are not prepared to give up anytime soon and both nine-year-olds; Kiean Boughen, from Lancashire, and Ollie Colmer, from Tyne & Wear, are as equally determined as their professional counterparts to claim the 2016 Arenacross crown.
